Regulations and Restrictions for SMS in the United States

What Rules and Regulations are in Place?

Besides all of the rules put in place by mobile carriers, there are also regulations set up by The Wireless Association.

The CTIA – The Wireless Association — oversees all SMS messaging in the United States. Strict standards govern messaging in the United States, and it’s critical to work closely with your sales adviser to ensure that your program is always compatible with the latest legislation.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibits sending SMS messages to a mobile phone using an auto-dialer unless the user has given their approval or the message is being sent for an emergency. All numbers, including those not on the Do Not Call list, are subject to the ban.

Short codes are perfect for marketing messages, bulk texting, and communications with URLs. Once your application is approved, you will receive the regulations for US short codes. The CTIA Short Code Monitoring Handbook is also available to view. Person-to-person communication, such as appointment reminders, notifications, and announcements, is generally sent via long numbers. That means you can use it to communicate with customers, staff, and others who are interested in your company. Only lengthy numbers are subject to the constraints listed below.
